Application Guide:

Fume hoods are ventilation equipment or exhaust systems designed to remove harmful or poisonous fumes that are in enclosed work area. They are installed to protect workers against toxic fumes, fires, and explosions. Hoods can be designed as well to reduce the possibility of chemical burns and they can also contain chemical spills. Fume hoods are particularly useful in laboratories, where researchers regularly work with hazardous substances in small confined spaces.

Fume hoods are designed to draw polluted air away from the work space and into an exhaust system. The air is then expelled through the exhaust system into a separate space away from employees.

Most fume hoods are made with ducts that convey polluted air into the atmosphere. Other fume hoods are constructed with recirculating fans, which absorb air through the hood and pass it through a filter before returning it to the workspace. While ductless fume hoods can be used in some less intensive tasks, ducted fume hoods are the standard in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

About Plastic Design’s Fume Hoods

At Plastic Design Inc., we specialize in providing fume hoods for the semi conductor, pharmaceutical and biomedical industries where laboratory technicians use dangerous chemicals and substances that need to be exhausted away. We offer several different types of hoods to meet our customers’ unique applications and specifications, including sliding sash, angled open front, fully isolated, table top, stand-alone, fully exhausted base cabinets, bench-top, and vertical laminar flow.

Sloped Sash: Two of our most popular designs include the sliding sash and angled open front styles. The sliding sash can be supplied counter balanced or manually pinned at different openings, while the angled design allows for improved visibility and more ambient light.

Straight Front: These are a very widely used vertical sash style which has a double side wall used to install different lab required features such as N2/ CDA / Vac and Water connections.

Laminar Flow Hood:  are hoods with HEPA or ULPA fan/filter assist, for areas where exhaust ducts are not available. Fan and air filter modules are mounted within the head case above the work area to provide positive pressure within the work area, thereby reducing operator exposure to hazardous fumes.

Table Top: are hoods built without a base cabinet designed to be placed on an existing laboratory countertop. These units can be made from many materials including acrylic which is a very popular option. All table top options can be customized to work within the limits of the workspace.

ALL of our fume hoods have undergone extensive laboratory testing to ensure that they meet the highest safety and quality standards. Because of our diverse inventory, we have a number of customization options available to create your unique hood. We offers standard solid front clear sashes which may be designed as solid sliding doors, solid piece liftup sashes or two-piece front sashes. Our two-piece front sashes are ideal for areas with limited headroom Because our hoods can be fabricated from a number of different materials, we have the ability to adapt them to any environment or application. One of our most popular customizations is the addition of built-in components to meet specific process needs. One of the requested adaptations require FM4910 compliance, the most commonly used materials for these adaptations are Factory Mutual-compliant plastics and stainless steel as well as explosion-proof Class I Division I requirements.

Plastic Design has provided customized solutions for companies in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Over the years, we’ve used our experience and expertise to develop lasting solutions to the challenges posed by modern pharmaceutical and biomedical research, helping our clients pursue groundbreaking projects while ensuring the health of the employees who handle them.
